The celebration of the 14th of July held in Vichy, recounted in the July 15th, 1942 editorial of the newspaper Le Petit Provençal, made no mention of either the Storming of the Bastille or the French Revolution. Rather, the celebration emphasized and paid honor to those who had perished in the name of the motherland. These acknowledgments included a wreathe-laying ceremony by the Head of State and several government officials at a war memorial, where the flag was placed at half-mast. None of these texts alluded to French independence, as reinforced by the following quote “La Fête Nationale was not a pretext for merrymaking”.
