"FRONT PATRIOTIQUE DE LA JEUNESSE

14 JUILLET 1942

JULY 14th, 1942

NATIONAL DAY OF COMBAT

FOR THE LIBERATION OF THE MOTHERLAND

YOUNG PEOPLE OF FRANCE

SPORT THE NATIONAL COLORS EVERYWHERE

While spending the afternoon in front of the

monuments erected in honor of the Republic,

liberty or the dead of the three wars.

DEMONSTRATE YOUR DESIRE TO UPHOLD THE GLORIOUS TRADITION OF THOSE WHO STORMED THE BASTILLE THE 14TH OF JULY 1789.

-          Crush LAVAL and his band of traitors!

-          Drive out the Germans from our land!

-          Restore France to the French!

YOUNG PEOPLE, UNITE TOGETHER WITHIN THIS PATRIOTIC FRONT UNTIL THE DEATHS OF THE KRAUTS! LONG LIVE FRANCE!

The Front patriotique de la jeunesse (FPJ), established by young communists, also included militants of different ideologies, particularly Christians. Following the example of adult political movements, the Front encouraged the protests of July 14th, 1942. The leaflet provides the members with instructions to wear the national colors, symbolized by two overlapping flags on the top of the leaflet, and to gather in the afternoon in front of not only the monuments of the dead of  “the three wars” (1870, 1914 and 1939-1954), but also in front of those “erected in of honor of the Republic [or] liberty”. In fact, these meetings would often occur on streets or in city squares with names that alluded to the Republic or liberty. As with many communist leaflets, the main historical occurrence commemorated is the Storming of the Bastille itself on the 14th of July 1789, rather than the Fête de la Fédération (the first anniversary of the Storming). The primary themes of the leaflet are the struggle against the German occupants (indicated by the use of the pejorative French word boche, or Kraut in English), the recovery of liberty, and the denunciation of “LAVAL and his band of traitors”. Pétain is not mentioned.
