This 41st issue of Défense de la France was printed on official printing machines.

This issue is almost exclusively devoted to the publication of large texts: the top of the first page bears de Gaulle's motto: « Victory! There is no other option... ».

- In the first article, titled « November 11, Martyr's Day », « Indomitus » pays homage to all of those « sons and daughters of France who have suffered in flesh and in their hearts during the past three years ». Défense de la France wants to « bear witness » so that the entire world knows what atrocities were committed on French soil.

- The rest of the paper presented excerpts from the German press dated 1918 then communications from GQG from the Führer from September to October 1943 and from Dr. Goebbels in September 1943.

- In the third article, Défense de la France follows with a series of excerpts from Gaullist texts reporting the « steps toward victory and renovation », showing its propaganda efforts in favor of rebellion.

---------

In November 1943, the movement had two machines at its disposal: the Teisch machine that it had acquired in April, which had been installed in the warehouse of a Labordière factory in Aubervilliers. The second, a Crafftmann, was given to the movement in October by their friend, Alain Radriguer, and was sheltered in an abandoned wash house owned by Madame Currin, an 84 year-old woman.

This new professional equipment allowed the movement to greatly increase its printing speed and augment the number of copies it could diffuse, which would increase continuously since the beginning of the year. At this point in time, the average printing reached approximately 150,000 copies.

At this time, Défense de la France was in the process of finalizing its professional installations begun in 1942 thanks to the determined help of professionals – above all, Jacques Grou-Radenez and Alain Radiguer – who enabled the movement to acquire professional machines and the various necessary materials, as well as training them in how to print their paper.

In addition, at this time, Défense de la France decentralized its printers in the Southern Zone following the conclusion of an agreement between Philippe Viannay and Claude Bourdet.

The latter « sought to contact me so that Défense de la France might participate in the unification operation in the Northern Zone, following the efforts already in place in the Southern Zone with the Mouvements unis de la Résistance (United Movements of the Resistance) » recalled Philippe Viannay. (1)

Défense de la France engaged in the printing and diffusion of Combat in the Northern Zone and in equipping the printing workshops in Lyon with a Crafftmann automatic press and the necessary materials, thanks to the help of Alain Radriguerf. In return, Bourdet's team, under the leadership of Velin, took over the printing and diffusion of Défense de la France in the Southern Zone. The two editions « would stay completely independent while realizing a pool of common information and photos ».

This decentralization considerably increased the printing of the newspaper at the end of 1943, as this issue achieved 250,000 copies. Thus the dispersal of the workshops – composition, template-making, and printing – allowed for a permanent specialization, an efficient strategy of diffusion, and a rigorous system of organization to respond to the demands of production from Philippe Viannay and to guarantee the movement's protection.

Undoubtedly, 1943 was an important year in the development of the movement, as it became an industrial organization. The evolution of the conflict since November 1942 favorably influenced the development of the Resistance. The underground newspapers adapted their discourse and fortified their operations. Such was the case for Défense de la France as well, who progressively changed the content of their newspaper.

While staying true to the principles they announced in 1941, the movement abandoned its repertoire little by little, which had thus far been centered on a simple moral protest, and moving in favor of a more radical message looking to mobilize the French to « definitively ruin the enemy ».

Thus, of the 27 issues published between November 1, 1942 and August 1944, the theme returned to 8 central themes, sometimes benefiting particular articles. At the same time, the Service du Travail Obligatoire (STO) was established on February 16, 1943, which forced young French men to be deported to Germany to work and aid the war effort, as Germany's labor force was weakened by the need of more troops.

The establishment of the STO gave Défense de la France the opportunity to provide clear orders calling the young French to desert. In addition, the counter-propaganda such as military information, which had previously been favored, now took a backseat.
Similarly, « the noxiousness of Nazism and the Pétain regime were proven by opinion, as the paper found it less useful to dwell on these themes. » (3)

The discourse of the newspaper thus underwent a complete turnaround, « dedicating itself to defining the terms of the combat ». (4) Finally, after a brief Giraudist period, with the influence of Jean-Daniel Jurgensen, the newspaper exhibited an undaunting loyalty to de Gaulle, who it considered to be the sole leader of the French struggle.

Contexte historique

The beginning of 1943 marked a pivotal moment in the global conflict. Beginning in the Spring, this change resulted notably from the institution of a common strategy by the Allied Forces, permitting them to stop the advancement of Axis forces on a majority of fronts.

From the banks of the Volga to the beaches of Sicily, the German army began to buckle. On February 2, Stalingrad was retaken by the Red Army, who swept out in pursuit of the Germans, retaking lands lost in 1942. In the summer of 1943, the Germans definitively lost their momentum on the Eastern Front, while the Axis forces capitulated in Italy. Rommel lost terrain in North Africa, where the Allies landed on the eighth of November. The Allied bombardments relentless pounded the industrial centers and military posts of the Reich and the territories occupied by the Wehrmacht.

These recent developments progressively and radically changed the face of the conflict on both the national and international stages, signaling the inevitable defeat of Germany. The Allied Forces could begin to assembling their forces with victory now seeming possible.

In France, the myth of Marshall Pétain was effectively crushed. The French, worn-out and tired of the hardships of rationing and the daily restrictions inflicted by a German occupation, cultivated a hatred toward the occupiers that had grown stronger and stronger since November 11.

The unpopularity of Pierre Laval, who became the head of the government on April 18, and the increase in German repression through raids and the Service du Travail obligatoire (STO) – a program forcing young French laborers to relocate to Germany to support the industries of war – encouraged the French to reject the collaboration, which thus inspired a change in the mentalities of the population.
The primary beneficiary of this change in mentality was the Resistance, who, throughout the first six months of 1942, ceaselessly spun its web of connections, preparing, watching, and waiting.

The evolution of the conflict led the Resistance to adapt to the general movement and become more involved in the present events. Thus, with the help of the civilian population, the Resistance housed numerous deserters of the STO and formed « Maquis » in relatively uninhabited areas. These Maquis were bands of armed men who became active in the Resistance fighting against the presence of the Reich.

The influx of these young maquisards allowed the Resistance to develop its actions on a ladder of command, constituting troops all across the territory. It was organized most notably by the actions of Jean Moulin who, for several months, had traversed France to regroup the leaders of the various resistance movements and bring them together in a process of unification.

Thus in January 1943, he created the United Movements of the resistance, united three principal movements in the Southern Zone – Combat, Libération, and Franc-Tireur. On May 27, he organized the first meeting of the Conseil national de la Résistance (National Council of the Resistance), which would represent the formation of movements across the two zones.

1943 was therefore a decisive year in which the balance tipped in favor of the Allies and in which, despite the suffering and the sacrifices that became more and more difficult, one could bring themselves to hope, one could dare to believe in a new future, to let themselves be carried away by the spirit of victory.
