Cet avis préfectoral fait suite au succès de l'opération "Torch", nom de code désignant le débarquement allié le 8 novembre 1942 dans les territoires français d'Afrique du Nord (Protectorat du Maroc et Algérie française).

Il est demandé discipline et solidarité à la population française, ainsi qu'une confiance sans limite dans le "mainteneur de l'unité française", le maréchal Pétain. Par ce biais, le corps préfectoral entend étouffer toute vélléité de contestation ou d'opposition à la politique décidée à Vichy.

This prefectural notice followed the success of operation “Torch”, the designated codename for the Allied landing on November 8^th, 1942 in French North African territories (Protectorate of Morocco and French Algeria).

The notice asks of the French population discipline and solidarity, and to trust unlimitedly the “keeper of French unity”, Marshal Pétain. Through this, the prefectural governing body intended to stifle any hint of opposition to or protest of Vichy politics.  

Contexte historique

Les conséquences de l'opération "Torch" vont s'avérer catastrophiques pour la Corse à double titre : d'abord parce que c'est l'annonce de l'occupation par les forces de l'Axe (Allemagne et Italie), ensuite parce que c'est aux troupes italiennes - ennemi de longue date des Corses - qu'il reviendra d'occuper l'île et d'administrer le nouveau régime d'occupation.

The aftermath of operation “Torch” would prove catastrophic for Corsica in two regards. Firstly, it led to the occupation of the island by Axis forces (Germany and Italy). Secondly, and more specifically, the charge of implementing the new occupying administration was devoted to the Italian troops, historical enemies of Corsicans.
