October 21st, 1943: Raymond Aubrac is Freed

Escape operations were another part of what the Groupes Francs did. It was the GF who orchestrated Raymond Aubrac's escape, and in which Ravanel would participate...

June 21st, 1943, Raymond Aubrac, head of the Secret Army (AS), was arrested in Caluire at a meeting with Jean Moulin called to reorganize the AS. Lucie Aubrac had organized the mission, but could not do it without «the help of the Groupes Francs » (1). After making sure that he could trust each of the men, Ravanel explained the mission to his toughest team: Lyon's central group.

First attempt: Derail the train that was delivering prisoners to Paris. Ravanel called on the GF of Ain, Saône and Loire for help, but there was never such a convoy and Aubrac was transported to Lyon.

Second attempt: On the morning of October 21st, 1943, Lucie Aubrac had organized a fake marriage contract and signed it. The plan was to attack the car carrying Raymond Aubrac on his way to Montluc prison at Avenue Berthelot. They missed the first passage at 7h00 because one of the GF's cars would not start...they would have to wait for that evening.

Third and final attempt: «October 21st 1943, we had finally come up with a plan that would work after four months of preparation. At six o'clock in the evening, once it had gotten dark, the GF's cars were in place» (2). In spite of setbacks, everything went according to plan and the GF successfully neutralized the German vehicle as it drove down the Boulevard des Hirondelles (now the Boulevard des Tchécoslovaques).
