June 6th 1944, Ravanel is named Colonel of the FFI

Soon after returning to Toulouse, Serge Ravanel learned the news that he had waited so long to hear: the Allies had landed in France. «Warmth surged through me...we thought it would never happen. »

Now more than ever, the Resistance needed to unify its military groups. The FFI was organized after many months of hard work on the part of resistants. They were not deterred by the rapid pace, the missions that still needed to be carried out, or by those who continued to fight bringing the Resistance together. Ravanel had been convinced very early on that a centralized military for the Resistance was for the best, given his past experiences, and so he made an ideal candidate for head of the FFI of Toulouse. On June 8th, 1944, the DMR sent him «a telegram from London, signed by General Koenig,» Chief of Staff for the FFI in London, « that nominated Ravanel for the Commander of the FFI at the rank of Colonel, code name: Hexagon.»
This new role meant that Ravanel had to adapt quickly to the job's requirements and contact his superiors in Toulouse for help.

This meant meeting with the delegates from the DMN and DMR who had been sent by General de Gaulle, as well as refer to General Koenig and the Comité d'Action of the CNR (COMAC) for instructions on how organize troops. He was also in touch with Jean Cassou, commissioner of the Republic who had been placed by the CFLN in Toulouse. He also had Maurice Bourgès-Maunoury, DMN of the South Zone, and the directors of COMAC, Alfred Malleret Joinville as Chief of Staff, Jean de Vogüé from the North Zone, Maurice Kriegel-Valrimont, head of groups in the South Zone, and Pierre Villon (Front national et FTP) to help guide him underneath the leadership of Degliame-Copeau.
